Science Policy for Farnham and Rickling Church of England Primary Schools

 

Vision:

We live in an increasingly scientific and technological age where children need to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes to prepare them for life in the 21st century. We, at the Federation of Farnham and Rickling, believe that the teaching of Science develops in children an interest and curiosity about the world in which they live.  This fosters in them a respect for the environment and provides opportunities to experience the awe and wonder of the natural world around us.  Through the framework of the new 2014 National Curriculum there is a new emphasis on the five areas of practical enquiry observing over time, pattern seeking, fair and comparative testing, classifying and research.

 

Principles:

  • Plan and teach lessons that will support and challenge our pupils
  • To provide engaging and memorable science lessons
  • Lessons will be well resourced to give children the best opportunities to learn practically
  • Children will be encouraged to ask and answer their own scientific questions
  • Children will participate in enquiries when working scientifically
  • Children will recognize their learning by using the self- assessment tools provided in the marking policy
  • Teachers will continue to link science to other curriculum areas.
  • We will continue to use ‘out and about’, outdoor learning, extra- curricular activities and link with other organisations to enrich science learning.

 

Aims and Objectives

  • Equip children to use themselves as starting points for learning about Science, and to build on their enthusiasm and natural sense of wonder about the world.
  • Develop through purposeful; outdoor learning the skills of observation, prediction, investigation, interpretation, communication, questioning and hypothesizing, and increased use of precise measurement skills and computer technology.
  • Encourage and enable pupils to offer their own suggestions, to be creative in their approach to Science, and to gain enjoyment from their scientific work.
  • Enable children to develop their skills of co-operation through working with others, and to encourage where possible, ways for children to explore Science in forms which are relevant and meaningful to them.
  • Teach how to work scientifically in the three main areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, following the 2014 Curriculum
  • Encourage children to collect relevant evidence, classify, observe over time, seek patterns, and perform fair tests, research and to question outcomes.
  • Encourage children to treat the living and non-living environment with respect and sensitivity.
  • Stress the need for personal and group safety by the correct usage and storage of resources.
  • To enable children to appreciate that we do not always know the answers and results when carrying out scientific enquiry.
  • To develop a two year rolling programme for KS1 and KS2, at both schools, now based solely on the New Curriculum areas. In Foundation, to develop skills across the curriculum as all the areas of learning and development are interconnected but especially in the ‘Understanding the World’ which is one of the specific areas.
  • To give children a chance to orally rehearse hypothesis, use relevant scientific language to verbalise deductions and analysis.
  • To develop environmental responsibility as befits the eco-status of the two federated schools.

 

The Philosophy and Ethos:

We believe Science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Through the programmes of study in the new 2014 National Curriculum children will acquire knowledge and develop these skills throughout their Primary years.

We believe that Science promotes communication in a specific and precise language involving mathematical and logical thinking. It allows children to develop ways of finding out for themselves and gives them practice in problem solving. Children should develop explicit use of language and computer literacy to support their thinking, observations and discoveries in Science.

As their knowledge and understanding increases and they become more proficient in selecting and using scientific equipment and collating and interpreting results they will become increasingly confident in their growing ability to come to conclusions based on real evidence. Science fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non living. It allows children to develop original ideas and a questioning attitude.

In Science, pupils are encouraged to be open- minded and to try and make sense of what they see and find out. The main focus of our approach will be through open-ended activities where we encourage children to recognize the need for fair testing and working scientifically to answer questions.

Inclusion:

In school we aim to meet the needs of all our children by differentiation in our Science planning and in providing a variety of approaches to bridge gaps, differentiate and have appropriate challenge in our tasks appropriate to all ability levels. This will enable children with learning and/or physical difficulties to take an active part in scientific learning and practical activities and investigations and to achieve the goals they have been set. Some children will require closer supervision and more adult support to allow them to progress whilst more able children will be extended through differentiated activities. By being given enhancing and enriching activities, more able children will be able to progress to a higher level of knowledge and understanding appropriate to their abilities.

The Federation supports the principles of collaborative learning across the schools to provide extension opportunities by understanding our pupils’ prior learning, providing different tasks and choices, moving from simple to complex ideas, from concrete to abstract ideas and moving from guided to independent tasks. We aim to maintain the close involvement with feeder schools as part of transition.

 

Assessment and Record Keeping:

Assessment for learning is continuous throughout the planning, teaching and learning cycle.  However children are more formally assessed in KS1 and KS2 using a variety of methods:-

  • Observing children at work, individually, in pairs, in a group, and in classes
  • Cross curricula links, topics and themed weeks
  • Next step marking, targets and learning objectives
  • In Foundation, Science provides children with opportunities for: Playing and exploring, active learning, creating and thinking critically. The purposeful play activities will provide a vehicle for formative assessment.
  • Initial and final assessment, in KS2, completed by using Rising Stars summative tests, with gradual introduction of Target Tracker from Summer 2017
  • KS1 to use Rising Stars assessments and teacher assessments moving towards gradual introduction using the interim curriculum in Years 2 and 6 and grids on Target Tracker for other year groups from Summer 2017
  • Questioning using the six areas of questioning, to elicit thoughts, check misconceptions and understanding through mini plenaries
  • Year 2 and Year 6 teachers to be aware of specific transition issues using interim frameworks
  • Talking and listening to children
  • Considering work/materials / investigations produced by children together with discussion about this with them.

Children’s progress is continually monitored and tracked throughout their time at Farnham and Rickling by checking skill progression grids on Target Tracker linking to age expectations

 

Health and Safety:

All staff should make themselves conversant with the following:   In regard to Science work in school all teachers will be conversant with the' "Be Safe" safety booklet. This should be read in conjunction with Code of Practice L222 July 2007.  Where appropriate reminders will be given to children about potential hazards and care of the equipment they are using.

Any educational visits will be planned with due regard to the school and appropriate approval of the governing body.   All staff should be conversant with Code of Practice L222 for safe handling of materials in Science.  Practical activities, events off site in the local area, out of classroom activities in the school grounds should all be risk assessed by the class teacher.
